Grading Syllabus

 

The Grading syllabus is a strong guideline only
but the instructor has the right to change the format as required:

 

Ku-Kyu (9th-kyu)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with gedan-barai turn around.
          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with age-uke turn around.
          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with chudan-soto-uke turn around.
          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with chudan-oizuke turn around.
          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with chudan-gyakuzuki turn around.
          From zenkutsu-dachi move forward with mae-geri turn around.

     2)  Kumite

          Sanbom-kumite once with jodan attacks and age-uki blocks,
          and once with chudan attacks and soto-uke blocks.

     3)  Kata

                 Taikyoku Shodan (kihon kata).

Hachi-kyu (8th kyu)

     1)  Kihon

                 From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan-oizuki.
          Move backwards with gedan-barai.
          Move forward with age-uke.
          Move backwards chudan soto-uke.
          Change to kokutsu-dachi and move forward with shuto-uke.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keagi
          and return using the other leg to kick.
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi.

     2)  Kumite

                  Gohon-kumite, once with jodan attacks and age-uke blocks,
           and once with chudan attacks and soto-uke blocks.

     3)  Kata

                 Heian Shodan.

Nana Kyu (7th Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

                From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan-oizuki.
          Move backward with gedan-barai.
          Move forward with age-uke.
          Move backward chudan soto-uke.
          Change to kokutsu-dachi and move backward with shuto-uke.
          Moving forward with mae-geri from zenkutsu-dachi.
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keage
          and return using the other leg to kick.
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi

     2)  Kumite

                 Gohon-kumite, once with jodan attacks and age-uke blocks,
          and once with chudan attacks and soto-uke blocks.

     3)  Kata

                 Heian Nidan.

Rokkyu (6th Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

                 From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan-oizuki.
          Move backward with age-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move forward chudan-soto-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move backward with chudan-uchi-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Change to kokutsu-dachi and move forward with shuto-uke.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keage
          and return using the other leg to kick. 
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi.

     2)  Kumite

          Gohon-kumite, once with jodan attacks and age-uke blocks,
          and once with chudan attacks and soto-uke blocks
          and once with mae-geri attacks and gedan-barai blocks.

     3)  Kata

          Heian Sandan.

Go-Kyu (5th Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan-oizuki. 
          Move backward with age-uke gyaku-zuki. 
          Move forward chudan-soto-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move backward with chudan-uchi-uke gyaku-zuki. 
          Change to kokutsu-dachi and move forward with shuto-uke.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mawashi-geri.
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keage
          and return using the other leg to kick. 
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi.

     2)  Kumite

          Kihon-ippon-kumite with one jodan-oizuki attack, one chudan-oizuki, and one mae-geri.

     3)  Kata

          Heian Yondan.

Yon-Kyu (4th Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan- oizuki.
          Move backward with age-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move forward chudan-soto-uke empi,
          while changing stance from zenkutsu-dachi to kiba-dachi by using yori-ashi.
          Move backward with chudan-uchi-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Moving forward with shuto-uke nukite,
          while changing stance from kokutsu-dachi to zenkutsu-dachi.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mawashi-geri.
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keage
          and return using the other leg to kick.
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi.

     2)  Kumite

          Kihon-ippon-kumite with jodan and chudan oizuki, mae-geri, and yoko-geri.

     3)  Kata

          Heian Godan.

San-kyu (3rd Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan-oizuki.
          Move backward with age-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move forward chudan-soto-uke empi uraken,
          while changing stance from zenkutsu-dachi to kiba-dachi by using yori-ashi.
          Move backward with chudan-uchi-uke kizami-zuki gyaku-zuki.
          Moving forward with shuto-uke nukite,
          while changing stance from kokutsu-dachi to zenkutsu-dachi.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.

          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri ren-geri (jodan-chudan).
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with ren-geri (mae-geri-mawashi-geri).

Ni-kyu (2nd Kyu)

Ikkyu (1st Kyu)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with sambon- zuki.
          Move backward with age-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Move forward chudan-soto-uke empi uraken,
          while changing stance from zenkutsu-dachi to kiba-dachi by using yori-ashi.
          Move backward with chudan-uchi-uke kizami-zuki gyaku-zuki.
          Moving forward with shuto-uke nukite,
          while changing stance from kokutsu-dachi to zenkutsu-dachi.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mawashi-geri.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with mae-geri ren-geri (jodan-chudan).
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with ren-geri (mae-geri-mawashi-geri).
          Change to kiba-dachi and move sideways with yoko-geri-keage
          and return using the other leg to kick.
          The same for yoko-geri-kekomi.

     2)  Kumite

          Jiyu-ippon-kumite. Attacks are jodan and chudan oizuki, mae-geri, yoko-geri, and mawashi-geri.

     3)  Kata

          Sentei-kata:  choose from Jion, Bassai-Dai, Empi and
          Kanku-Dai (to be chosen by the examinee).

Shodan (1st Dan)

     1)  Kihon

          From zenkutsu-dachi with gedan-barai move forward with chudan oizuki.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with chudan oizuki gyaku-zuki.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move back with age-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move forward with chudan soto-uke gyaku-zuki.
          Turn around with zenkutsu-dachi and move back with gedan-barai gyaku-zuki.

     2)  Kumite

          Jiyu-ippon-kumite.  Attacks are jodan and chudan oizuki, mae-geri, yoko-geri and maswashi-geri.

     3)  Kata

          Sentei-kata:  choose from Jion, Bassai-Dai, Empi, and
          Kanku-Dai (to be chosen by the examinee).

          Kihon-kata:  one kata chosen freely by the examiner from
          Heian Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan or Tekki Shodan.

Nidan (2nd Dan)

     1)  Kihon

          From free-style kamae oizuki.
          From free style kamae gyaki-zuki.
          From zenkutsu-dachi kamae ren-geri (mae-geri - mawashi-geri - yoko-geri - ushiro-geri).
          From zenkutsu-dachi gyaki-zuki - chudan soto-uke - gyaku-zuki - gedan-barai gyaku-zuki.

     2)  Kumite

          Jiyu-kumite (free-style sparring).

     3)  Kata

          Sentei-kata:  choose from Jion, Bassai-Dai, Empi, and
          Kanku-Dai (to be chosen by the examinee).

         Kihon-kata:  one kata chosen freely by the examiner from
         Heian Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan or Tekki Shodan.

Sandan (3rd Dan)

     1)  Kihon

          From free-style kamae kizami-zuki - samon-zuki.
          From free-style kamae kazami-zuki - mae-geri - oizuki.
          From free-style kamae step back age-uke - mawashi-geri (with back leg) - uraken - oizuki.
          From kiba-dachi and move sideways kicking toko-geri-keage - yoko-geri-kekomi (changing legs).
          From zenkutsu-dachi while staying in place with the back leg kick mae-geri,
          yoko-geri - ushiro-geri (left and right).

     2)  Kumite

          Jiyu-kumite (free-style sparring)

     3)  Kata

          Tokui-gata:  choose from Sochin, Unsu, Gojushiho-Dai,
          Gojushiho-Sho, Meikyo, Jiin, Unsu, Nijushiho-Sho, Kanku-Dai,
          Bassai-Sho, Tekki Nidan, Tekki Sandan, Gankaku, Hangetsu
          and Chinte (to be chosen by the examinee).

          Sentei-kata:  one kata chosen freely by the examiner from Jion,
          Bassai-Dai, Empi and Kanku-Dai.

Godan (5th Dan)

     1)  Kumite

          Jiyu-kumite (free-style sparring)

          and Chinte (to be chosen by the examinee).

          Sentei-gata:  one kata chosen freely by the examiner from Jion,
